The hammock of grace

What if rest is not something you create, but something you receive?

Could it really be that simple? In a world filled with noise, movement, and endless demands, it can be difficult to imagine that rest is already here. Waiting for you.

Not somewhere far away.
Not at the end of a long journey of self-improvement.
But here. Now.
The moment you take your next breath.

The very fact that you exist means you belong to a deeper reality, a wellspring of rest that has always been flowing beneath the surface of your life. A quiet stream of love that cannot be exhausted. A home that cannot be lost.

No matter what has happened to you.
No matter how tired, restless, or uncertain you may feel.
Take a breath in.
And slowly breathe out.
Don’t strive.
Don’t prove yourself by hurry.
Don’t become someone else.
You are already held in Love.
Deeply held.
Every moment of every day.

A few moments in Mirjam van der Vegt’s life this love became almost tangible. Moments that gently opened something within her and changed her from the inside out. As a busy achiever, she knew how to get things done. As a perfectionist and a devoted Christian, she was familiar with discipline, commitment, and growth. Yet beneath all her efforts, a deeper longing remained.

A longing for rest.
A longing to be received instead of evaluated.
To be loved instead of measured.
To simply be.

And there, in the midst of that longing, she encountered the Father of love, with the tenderness and comfort of a mother.
Not demanding.
Not judging.
Not pushing her toward a better version of herself.
But inviting her into life.
Into grace.
Into the gentle mystery of receiving.

After experiencing burnout, Mirjam began a long journey of exploration. She listened to the wisdom of monastic traditions, learned from nature, engaged with scientific insights, listened to voices from around the world, and returned again and again to the stories of Scripture.

What she discovered became the foundation for her bestselling book The Power of Resting Well, awarded Best Spiritual Book of the Netherlands.

Come and join the journey

Through books, audio journeys, retreats, reflections, and conversations, Mirjam continues to explore the mystery of rest together with others. Because rest was never meant to be a solitary pursuit.

We walk together.
And Christ walks with us.
Leading us along ancient paths that still speak to the deepest needs of the human heart.
The journey is both grounded and profound.

You will learn from contemplatives and farmers. From philosophers and shepherds. From mountain climbers and from people who have discovered hope in the valley.
With her feet firmly planted in the soil, Mirjam loves the wisdom hidden in ordinary life. For often the deepest truths are not found by climbing higher, but by becoming more present to what is already here.

Long ago, she left behind the idea that rest is passive or dull.
True rest is alive.
It awakens us to wonder.
It teaches us to live from peace instead of constantly searching for it.
And from that place, we become bearers of peace in a restless world.

Rest is learning to live in the hammock of grace.
To trust who holds you.
To move at the pace of joy.
To discover, step by step, a gentler way of living.
